This book has been long anticipated by me. Readers should note that this is only the first in an ongoing series of Nnewts books! This is the first time Doug TenNapel has released a graphic novel with definite plans to continue the story in subsequent books. Since I have often wanted this with some of his other work (Earthboy Jacobus comes to mind), this is great news! TenNapel is very ambitious with his stories and world-building, and if he has any weakness, it is he sometimes doesn't give his big ideas enough room to breathe. With Nnewts, we're going to get to follow our hero for a lot longer than we normally do with a TenNapel story, and that is exciting.I won't summarize the story for you; you can read that above. This first book sets up the world and character of Herk. We start with him as a kid and his background is set up: his family, his village, his people, his customs, his desires, his weaknesses, and his strengths. This is how to start a grand Myth. Other reviewers have complained about the dark tonal elements, the death. Well, this is often how the hero in a great myth begins: in tragedy. See Star Wars IV. Luke's family is killed by evil forces and he is called to a great adventure, to become the hero and thwart those forces. So it is with Herk. We're just seeing the beginning, the first chapter. This is, in fact, my only complaint about this book: I want to read the rest of the chapters now! TenNapel creates his work almost entirely on his own (everything but the color-work), so 192 pages of hand-drawn art and story takes a while to produce, so we're going to have to wait awhile before we can see this whole thing. But, think of Bone, and how long it took to get that whole story. I think our patience will be rewarded with Nnewts.Speaking of the art, it's great. I don't know what the other reviewers were talking about regarding not being able to identify characters. I had no such problems. TenNapel is at his best when he is creating fantasy worlds: houses and villages and weapons and tools and monsters and creatures. This is his wheelhouse. Special recognition should also be given to Catherine Garner's colors, which beautifully enhance TenNapel's line-work.I've got both the hardcover edition and the Kindle edition. The hardcover is Scholastic's usual quality. Nicely printed on good stock. I still wish for a bigger format, but this is certainly readable and enjoyable. This was my first graphic novel on the Kindle, and it actually works really well. When my kids are old enough to enjoy this it will be nice giving them a Kindle to browse a whole library of comics while on a road trip.If you're a fan of TenNapel's other work, or of cartoon fantasy, or of newts, you will enjoy this. Highly recommended.
Herk is a young Newt who just longs for stronger legs. As a newt, he must spend time in water until he grows up enough to be on land. But when his little village is attacked, he is forced to leave his home and leave behind all he has even known. Now on the run, Herk encounters strange creatures he has never seen before. This is an incredible coming of age story set in a graphic novel. The illustrations are eye catching and complex, while at the same time easy to follow. The story quickly grabs the reader and makes for a page turning action story. This type of book appeals especially to boys who may be reluctant readers, and the illustrations hold their interest and encourage them to read more. This story may seem simple, but there is a lot of underlying plots that will interest adults too.Disclaimer: I purchased this book. The author and I are college friends. After 30 years we have reconnected and I highly recommend his books. https://www.amazon.com/Escape-Lizzarks-Nnewts-Doug-TenNapel/dp/0545676460/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1523286471&sr=8-3&keywords=nnewts
Fantastic book. Doug strikes a great balance between making it appealing and relatable to younger readers who might be getting into comics (or even reading in general) for the first time, while still having enough nuance and narrative layers that parents and older readers can thoroughly enjoy this. Because this is a story with REAL villains and REAL heroes there is going to be some violence and danger, but it's never anything gratuitous or excessive - it's just enough to let the reader know that there's high stakes involved and that Herk has serious enemies after him. For any parents concerned about it, I'd say it's about as intense as the scarier parts of The Hobbit or the Narnia books. Also TenNapel's way with character acting and dialog has always been amazing over the years, and it's just as strong in Nnewts. I loved the way he came up with these little rhymes and style of "Nnewtlish" that the characters speak. It's perfectly easy for kids to understand, while still having a lot of hilarious little jokes and puns for the more advanced readers to pick up on as well.
Fun graphic novel with a good story. I enjoyed the colorful drawings and the characters. The dialogue was pretty good most of the time but once in awhile it didn't flow so well. This is a book for younguns but I quite enjoyed it as an adult. Be aware that there are some grisly deaths at the beginning though that some children might not cope with. Look forward to grabbing book 2.
Oh man! We love the Nnewt books at our house. I'm glad there's three separate books or there might be some conflict over who gets to read it into the wee hours of the night between our kids... and maybe the parents too. Maybe.
The artwork is beautiful. The panel work keeps the line of action easy to follow and exciting. I love this book because all of Doug TenNapel's graphic novels are inventive and creative but this one is the most dreamlike. If you like J.R.R. Tolkien's books you're gonna love the origin story of a hobbit-like little Nnewt named Herk. This story can get a little dark but it still has a lot of classic Doug TenNapel humor. After reading this book I can't look at my pet newts the same way again.
My 6th grade struggling readers love Doug TenNapel. We have his other book and my kids can't wait until it is their turn to have this book to take home. Good Job!!!
My fourth graders have asked for more books by the author. It was a total hit!
