I was so excited to see another horse book . As I started reading , it became more then just a horse book . Welcome to the world or North Oak a breeding farm for thoroughbreds and let me introduce you to Alexandra Anderson. An orphan that has gone through so much in her young life . She is trying to be tough and stay unattached to all people an feelings . When she is found and taken in she is scared and wondering if they will still want her after they find out the deep dark secrets that she is hiding When I started to read this book, I knew that this way going to be way more then just about a girl and her horse. The author takes on a journey of self discovery and what love can do to a broken soul. Her characters are complex and conflicted . The story line could be taken out of the pages of a newspaper. The horses are not put into the story line just for show . They are a big part of the story . Alexandra is a great character . She is trying to be tough but deep down inside she is a scared little girl. She has been through so much in her young life. But she is also a survivor, she doesn't want to get involved with anyone cause of her past in the group home . She sees the love between the families but doesn't know how to react when they show her love. But as you read you see that Alex is starting to blossom under the care. She touches all the other characters in such profound ways. Especially Mr North who knows more then he is letting on. You can see how she has affected him and the rest as you read along . I read this book in an afternoon. There are twists an turns that will keep you reading. There is so much that goes on , you won't be disappointed. There is a little bit of religion that goes on in the book but it is in appropriate places and doesn't overpower the book. This is a great book for the ages of 13- adult . The characters are great and the story flows with such ease . The ending kind of blew me away . This is a great start to hopefully a great new series . So if you want a great read with horses an complex characters . This will be the series for you .

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It caught my attention right from the start. Alex, a runaway girl, who only loved one person, but she was sadly taken away from her. Alex’s character was so well described that you couldn’t help, but feel with the poor girl. On the outside she seemed tough, but you soon find out it was just a cover up for all the hurt and bad treatment she had experienced in her young life. At North Oak she made friends with what she called a dumb horse and when things get too hard to handle for Alex she finds peace in his stall talking to the horse. A very touching story with a twist that made you keep on reading to the end. Highly recommended.

This is a fantastic book for tween/teen readers…even younger!! When I was reading it, I immediately flashed back to The Black Stallion series (one of my all time favorite horse books!!!).Alex’s story, though, isn’t an easy one to read. She had been abandoned into the foster care system…which treated her badly and she ended up doing something that could significantly change her life. I wanted to cry when it was revealed how badly she had been treated where she was at.There are some twists in the book but the major plot twist was the one that came at the end. Not going to reveal it (READ THE BOOK!!!).Disclaimer: I received Born to Run for free from Afterglow Productions for my honest review. I received no financial compensation for this review and all opinions expressed are mine and mine alone.

I have had horses for most of my life and love to read books about them and the people who love them too. This book was far better than my expectations. Such a sad but wonderful story about a young girl, AlexandraAnderson seemingly thrown away by society, unloved and unwanted, who finds her way home, even thoughshe does not know it yet and I hope it is finally disclosed to her in the subsequent books. I can't wait to seehow she grows up and what kind of woman she will become and will she follow in her mother's footsteps.

As a kid, I loved reading all the books about horses -- Black Stallion, Timber Trail Riders, My Friend Flicka, etc. This book is as good as all those classics, with a modern edge to it. The emphasis on family is also excellent. Alex is a well-drawn character who has you rooting for her from the beginning. Her story will carry you along at a dizzying pace.

I gobble up horse book after horse book. I loved this one and read it fast and now I can't wait for Book #2! Alexandra Anderson is an interesting character. At 13 - the world and people in general have not been kind to her and it shows. A chip on her shoulder the size of a boulder. But, charged with murder?? There is a lot more to the story and I can't wait to read Book #2!!

I was a huge fan of the Thoroughbred series, and when I heard about this new series, I knew I had to read it. Even as an adult, I appreciated the storyline, and the introduction of new characters that I'm looking forward to finding out more about in future books. It is a little darker than the old Thoroughbred series, but also a bit more realistic for todays' day and age. I would recommend it for adults and older Young Adult readers. A great read for anyone who loves horses, horse racing, and was a fan of the Thoroughbred series.

Ann Hunter has composed a great start to the series. I spent a few late nights, wrapped up North Oak and all the twists and turns. I will say I would recommend for older YA readers due to the language and thematic elements but they aren't overwhelming to the point of distracting from the storyline. Read through it in a couple of days--excited for the next book!
