Spoiler alert! Don't read the introduction by Brad Leithauser. He gives away the entire plot! I made that mistake and I think I would have enjoyed the book much more without it. It was one of the most useless introductions I have ever seen. I was hoping for an introduction that would give some clues about how to pronounce the names, and explain a bit about the Icelandic terms for officials. For example, what is a Fell King? By the end of the book, it appears to be an elected position, but what are its duties? The term sounded very vaguely familiar, so I googled it, but found only references to this book. Another question, what were the duties of the Bailiff? It doesn't sound like the job we call by the same name.My book club had a lively discussion about this novel, so I would recommend it for that reason. But don't read the introduction.
Boy, what a tough slog this was as a read. Grim background, tough story, unlikable main characters and I don't think there was a single uplifting moment in the entire story. So if you're looking for any of those, pick up some other book.On the other hand, the author was awarded a Nobel Prize for a reason and that, to me, is a good enough reason to try at least one of his works. He was, in fact, making a commentary about society and capitalism in his home country of Iceland. It helps to read up a little bit on that before tackling this book....and I mean just a Wikipedia read, not books and books on the matter. With that context, it is a little bit more bearable of a read. Still, a tough one. I was able to get through it partly because it was a book club assignment and partly because once I start a book I feel compelled to finish, but it was a close call. I have some very literary-minded friends who ended up just giving up. So be warned, you must be in the mood for a downer, written at a slow place. This is not a book that will let you read it quickly.
I feel I must defend this book, which is a kind of splendid, wide-ranging saga. For readers who are literal-minded and unable or unwilling to engage in the spirit of it, don't bother. I first read Independent People years ago, shortly after its release in English, and greatly enjoyed it. But only after reading more by Laxness, returning to some of the traditional Icelandic sagas and visiting Iceland have I come to appreciate Independent People so much more completely. It is wise, compassionate, droll, sometimes cruel.... Laxness gives a panorama of Icelandic history, right up into 20th c penetration of a monetary, capitalist economy linked to world events. He creates vivid characters-- elderly and adrift in their own separate worlds; adolescents; a child whose fantasies populate a sod room with magical beings; depressed wives.... The animals too are characters with souls and feelings.Laxness is a superb storyteller with a lot to say. The reader simply needs to be open to the possibility that a great novel needn't conform to the models we've learned from Dostoevsky, English and French writers, etc..
The narrative itself is excellent, a good example of Laxness's work and something I would recommend to anyone who has read his shorter books and is looking for something a bit longer. However, the transfer over to Kindle format has not gone well, and there seems to have been little in the way of quality control to check this. At first, I figured the occasional misspelling or odd error in grammar was down to a scanning error that got missed on the final check through, but the more I read, the more I saw, ranging from the forgivable to the glaringly obvious. This may at times affect the reader's ability to understand passages of the text, and is something you should bear in mind before purchasing, given the current price.
In my opinion, this is a true masterpiece that can be easily comparable to Master and Margarita by Bulgakov or Dostoevsky's Crime abs Punishment. Not an easy read, the author captures the whole nation's spirit as it struggles for independence through the story of one of its holy man - a free man Bjartur. This is a book about sheep, yes, sheep. But most and foremost, this is an incredible story about life, love, human sufferings, longings and struggles. It leaves you filled with compassion towards a small but independent nation of Iceland that courageously stands alone on the little but mighty island in the middle of the ocean. It cracks the door into a human sole and gives a glimpse into it's phycology. What you see might not be pretty but it definitely will leave you with respect, understanding and admiration towards the nation and towards us, human beings. Read it and you won't regret embarking on this journey as there will be many surprises and sights along the road. Let the book take you on the journey.
Whenever I travel I try to read an iconic book about the country I am visiting, that lets me know a bit of the story and culture. I couldn't have chosen better with this icelandic book! Although the main character, Bjartur of Summerhouses, seems unnecessarily proud and at times cruelly stoic, his toughness is comprehensible in the context of the difficult life he lives. I loved the book all the way through. Do not expect a happy story, but rather a realistic, tough, leading to reflexion and at times deeply sad story. Some people argue that it is slow and that the British translation makes it hard to follow for american English speakers. In my opinion, the book is detailed but never more than necessary and I found the language easy to follow but with a very enriching lexicon, which is helpful for me as a non-native speaker. In summary, this is one of my favorite books from now on and I encourage people to read it.
