I'm a new drummer, taking lessons to help with my rhythm skills in playing piano and singing. Really like the exercises, and description at the beginning of how different rhythms relate to each other. Clear well done explanation of notation, rests, tempo markings, and musical expressions. Good list of different drum strokes, too. And an additional several pages of musical terms at the end of the book, and not only terms that apply specifically to drumming. One thing I appreciate about drumming is the names for some of the drum strokes, flam, paradiddle, drag, ruff; these are fun and descriptive.
This book was recommended by my son's percussion instructor and I couldn't be happier. It's easy for him to use to practice at home and a great tool to use with his teacher to give him exercises and gauge progress.

I bought this text many years ago, and was unable to find, now we are able to share with a new group of students. I reccomend this book for all stuents of percussion.
I was introduced to the Podemski Method by my first drum teacher. He used it to teach rhythm reading, sticking, dynamics, and technique. I was not particularly interested in orchestral drumming, but the discipline required to do this work proved key to everything I have done in drumming since.When I started taking students, this book, along with Stick Control: For the Snare Drummer by George L. Stone, Funky Primer for the Rock Drummer by Charles Dowd, and Advanced Techniques For The Modern Drummer: Coordinating Independence As Applied To Jazz And Be-bop With Cd (audio) (Vol. 1) by Jim Chapin became my basic curriculum. They have never let me down!
