Definitely aimed at the aviator, aerodynamicist, and the aviation historian. As someone who remembers Doolittle primarily from the Thirty Seconds over Tokyo classic, the author introduces us to the man he was prior to his historic flight in the Gee Bee R1 Racer. A more complex driven man than than most of us are familiar with. The author also introduces us to the Granville brothers and their unlikely journey from the farm to builders of the fastest racing aircraft of that time. The unlikely marriage of Doolittle and the Granville Brothers to fly the Gee Bee R-1 in the 1932 air races encompasses many of the ironic twist that that make history, and life so fascinating. That said, the author covers, especially the aircraft with excruciating detail, beyond that needed to understand the flight characteristics of the aircraft. Perhaps because in a book the cries out for them, there are no photographs. In addition, the chapters feel like a string of essays, each repeating fundamental information already covered in previous chapters. The book could have used a more through editing process and been greatly improved in a more concise text. All in all, as an aviation enthusiast, the book provided insight to a fascinating period in our history and how it all came together to produce this memorable event.
First off, I am reviewing the Kindle edition - perhaps some of my gripes stem from poor transcription. But that doesn't explain all the things that bothered me. And I apologize in advance if I seem mean - I just believe authors need to give us good efforts that have been polished up from first drafts.Jimmy Doolittle, the Granville Brothers Gee Bees, and the 1932 Thompson Trophy Race are worthy and fascinating subjects in aviation history. I REALLY wanted to enjoy this book. But, if you are going to author a work of aviation history, you need a certain amount of technical rigor and accuracy - all the more so if you are going to embed specifications into the text. But there are some bad glitches here - at one point, my text reads "The wing cord was between four and five inches, depending on the location of the measurement, with a total wing area of 100 square feet." Now I see that the author has experience in aviation operations and dispatch and in fact teaches in this field at university level - yet he failed to catch basic errors here. Aviation/aeronautics has its own jargon, words often unique in form or usage to the field. One of these is "chord" - the dimension from the leading edge to the trailing edge of a wing surface. For a full-sized aircraft, this can't possibly be four to five inches - instead it would be, for a plane the size of the Gee Bee R-1, several feet, perhaps four to five, but the Gee Bee R-1 wings are not tapered - they are constant chord from the root until the trailing edge begins to taper in to the rounded tip profile. So, error one: "cord" rather than the correct "chord". Error two: we aren't able to tell whether this is a sloppy description of a wing with a chord of between 48 and 60 inches due an error in the units (inches rather than feet?), or incorrect usage of the term "chord" when the author was actually describing wing THICKNESS - four to five inches is a reasonable number for that dimension.If you've read this far, you probably think I am an annoying nitpicker - but here is my point: the author of an aviation work assumes a position of one who dispenses information about a highly technical field. To be credible, that author needs to be accurate in his numbers and use of the correct terminology. In this book, I see examples like the one above that speak to me of possible technical sloppiness in writing and proofreading, or a lack of understanding of the correct terminology, or maybe both. Seeing this in an easy to spot section of the book makes me wonder what subtler inaccuracies are embedded in the manuscript, due to a similar lack of attention to detail. A careful proof reading should have caught these kinds of things, and I have trouble believing anybody with a good grounding in basic aeronautics could have missed them in the first place. So, I have to conclude that a knowledgeable writer slapped together a sloppy manuscript, probably quickly, and didn't bother to proof read it.Just to reinforce the point about sloppiness, a few pages after the muddled sentence above, there is a perfectly accurate description of the wing chord (turns out it was 53 inches from the wing root to 88 inches out from the fuselage), along with an accurate definition of what "chord" means in this context! A decent editor would have been all over this, but in my opinion so would a conscientious author. I'm sorry to be so harsh, Mr. Beckman, but I believe you take on that obligation when you decide to write a book and charge money for it.Add to that the fact that the book displays a writing style of beating a point to death in short declarative sentences that scream out for consolidation by a good editor. Here's an example of one such:"The race had always brought the best out. All manufacturers and pilots would give their best efforts to take home the money and the trophy. This was evident with the increasing speeds year over year. Everyone was going to give their best effort for this race."This sequence of words could have really used some streamlining and reduction of repetition - in other words, editing. It just looks like this book never got any.
Even if you've heard the story before, this book should be read by anyone interested in the history of air racing, Jimmy Doolittle, or the Granville Brothers. Its a great read and provides a rich backstory of all involved. The book shows how each of them developed their interest in airplanes, how their paths eventually crossed, and how they they teamed together to become legends. It provides a nostalgic look back in time to when aircraft flight was filled with wonder and awe.
This reads like a high school report,some interesting information but poorly written.The authors constant and completely inappropriate use of"Jimmy"when referring to Doolittle is annoying and tiresome.The book also stops short of the actual end of the story with the last quarter of the story being rushed off in a couple of paragraphs.
Good book. Good detail about the Granville brothers. Lots of typos and needs some editing. Jimmy Doolitttleâ€s autobiography is a great book. This book details Doolittles Gee Bee race in good detail, but Doolittle’s “I Could Never Be So Lucky Again†is a superior volume and a must read for any aviation enthusiast.
The author did a great deal of research on putting together this early history of aviation. I would recommend this book to anyone interested in the early development of the aircraft.
This book held my attention and entertained me all while teaching me about another area of life...aviation. Very interesting to learn the struggles and triumphs that led to making the famed Doolittle. Anyone with or without an interest in aviation should read.
A revealing look at the drive and personalities of a group of great men in aviation history. An interesting narrative on sport aviation and how it drove the development of military aircraft later on.
